Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to care for his flock of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind through the lone tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day upon day, looking out for his charges imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.

Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but found nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This prank laughed for a few days more. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy here raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
